Welcome to Bread Culture! This online course is designed for the home baker who has little or no experience baking sourdough bread. I have tried to keep this course as simple as possible, and I have added troubleshooting notes throughout. I walk you through step by step, from creating your own wild yeast starter, to mixing, shaping, and baking your own loaf of fermented sourdough bread. I also encourage creating a bread community through this platform, and welcome you to contact me if you have any questions via email or directly on Teachable. You will have lifelong access to this video, so I sincerely hope you go through it step by step and ultimately begin baking bread on the norm.
You can begin by watching my free seven minute introduction section on this page.
Thanks for bringing me that much closer to helping people bake their own sourdough in the comfort of their own homes to share with family and friends!
Hi and Welcome! My name is Mary and I began Bread Culture over 6 years ago. What started as a kitchen experiment has led me to teaching hundreds of students in the Los Angeles area, selling my bread in stores and farmer's markets, being written up in the L.A. Times and other publications, and more. I am very grateful to have shared my mission with so many wonderful people, but given my location I can only reach so many. This is why I have decided to offer a version of my class online so it can be more widespread and bread can be baked at home by more people.
My mission is to help people create their own organic, sourdough, whole grain bread in the comfort of their own home to share with their family and friends.
I am a Physician of Eastern Medicine focused on Nutrition and I have regained my own digestive health with these methods. I was sick for several years before I found sourdough. As one of my students said, sourdough is "a bread that heals." I want to teach people these same simple methods so that they can also eat bread that is healthy, won't spike the blood sugar, is high in vitamins and minerals, and tastes incredibly delicious.
I hope you join me!
